Canine Behavior & Training

Building Better Relationships Through Understanding, Communication, and Trust

At Pinetree Animal Hospital, the mission of our Canine Behavior & Training Services is to help owners create peaceful, balanced, and nurturing relationships with their dogs by understanding natural canine behavior and communication. Throughout his career, our canine behavior and training specialist Thomas “Tom” Israel has observed that many challenges between dogs and their owners involve misunderstandings in communication, expectations, and everyday interactions.

Seeing the World from the Dog’s Perspective

To truly understand a dog, we must first learn to see the world from the dog’s perspective. Dogs naturally communicate and interpret their surroundings as dogs; they do not automatically understand human expectations. Tom teaches owners to recognize canine communication, better understand behavioral responses, and adjust their own interactions in ways that support clarity and trust.

Understanding Behavior Beyond Obedience

Basic commands such as sit, down, stay, and here can be valuable and enjoyable parts of training. Tom believes, however, that basic commands should not be utilized for correction or control. Commands should be enjoyable for the dog. Obedience, basic command training can teach a dog what to do mechanically, but understanding behavior reveals to the owner why the dog does what it does.

A Methodology Built Around the Dog

Drawing on decades of observation and hands-on experience, Tom has developed a canine behavior and training methodology that helps owners identify patterns and situations that may unintentionally contribute to unwanted behavior. Rather than focusing only on suppressing behavior, his approach emphasizes understanding contributing factors and improving communication. His guiding belief is simple: “We should never seek to break the spirit or natural will of a dog. We should strive to understand it and learn to work with it.”

Through behavioral education, individualized guidance, basic command training, recreational training, and other canine programs, Tom aims to equip owners with greater understanding and practical skills.

Our goal is not simply to teach dogs to respond to people. It is to teach people how to understand their dogs.
